New York Jets Stage Epic Comeback to Beat Bengals
The New York Jets came into Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals as the only team without a single win in the NFL. The 0-7 Jets haven’t been short of story lines heading into their battle against Cincinnati.
The Jets planned to start backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor, but he suffered an injury during practice, so the team had to return to starting quarterback Justin Fields. With the confidence in the Jets at an all-time low, the Bengals were one of the most popular picks in NFL survivor leagues in Week 8.
Early Struggles Continue for Jets
It was looking like another loss for the Jets on Sunday. They headed into the fourth quarter trailing the Bengals 31-16. Joe Flacco looked like nothing, and no one could stop him heading into the fourth.
With 14:17 left in the fourth quarter, Breece Hall at last found the endzone on a five-yard touchdown run. Hall’s touchdown successfully cut the deficit to seven. On the ensuing drive, the Bengals drove down the field, and Chase Brown capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run.
Jets fans felt their backs against the wall, trailing 38-24, almost halfway into the fourth quarter. Somehow, the Jets bounced back with 7:52 left in the fourth quarter, thanks to another Breece Hall touchdown. His 27-yard score was his second rushing touchdown of the game. On the two-point conversion, Fields found running back Isiah Davis to cut the Bengals’ lead to six.
United Forces of Hall And Fields for the Win
On the following Bengals drive, the Jets forced a three-and-out. The Jets finally had a chance to pull off their coveted first win. The Jets’ drive was one to remember. Hall broke multiple runs, and Fields completed some big-time passes.
On the first end goal, the Jets pitched the ball to Hall. From the looks of the play, it looked like the Bengals had Hall bottled up in the backfield. To the surprise of every onlooker, Hall pulled up and passed the ball to tight end Mason Taylor. Although Taylor was blanketed in the endzone, he came down with the touchdown reception. With his shocking moves, Taylor gave the Jets the 39-38 lead after the extra point.
With just over a minute remaining, Flacco tried to rally the Bengals, but the Jets’ defense held strong. Four plays later, the upset was sealed. The Jets, at long last, were winners: 39-38.
What Is Next for the Jets?
The Jets’ next opponents are the Cleveland Browns in New York. The game will take place after their Week 9 bye week. Luckily, Cleveland comes into New York with a 2-6 record. It isn’t out of the equation that the Jets could manage to grab a 2-7 score after Week 10.
