AFC West Breakdown 2025
The AFC West has not disappointed through six weeks of the NFL 2025 season. While the Kansas City Chiefs have won the division nine times straight, the competition hasn’t been far behind. Looking at it as a whole, the AFC West has the potential of becoming the most competitive division in the NFL.
Chargers and Broncos are setting the pace this season at 4-2, dominating both the standings and the spotlight. The Chiefs aren’t far behind at 3-3, keeping the pressure on. But down at the bottom, the Raiders, under rookie head coach Pete Carroll, are struggling to find their rhythm at 2-4.
With 11 more games left to play, who do you think will come on top and win the AFC West?
Los Angeles Chargers Hot Start
The Chargers sit atop the AFC West, powered by an explosive offense and a defense that holds its ground. At the heart of it all is quarterback Justin Herbert: the engine driving the team’s momentum. He is their rock, managing to avoid any disappointments throughout the first six games of the season. Herbert has thrown for 1,493 yards and ten touchdowns so far in the season. One could say he used his legs quite effectively, averaging 25.8 rushing yards per game.
In the run game, the Chargers have suffered a season-ending injury to Najee Harris. Another notable injury fell upon rookie Omarion Hampton, which could sideline him for the next four to six weeks.
At 3-0 against divisional rivals, the Chargers are clearly in command. If they can keep injuries in check, it’s safe to say they’ll remain the clear fan favorite to take the division crown.
The Denver Broncos Continue Close Games Wins
Surprisingly or not, the Broncos are tied with the Chargers at the top of the AFC West. Their road to 4-2 hasn’t been pretty, but as we all know, when it comes to the NFL, all that matters is the win column.
The squad has notably struggled to beat the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans, two of the worst teams in the NFL. Losing with a combined record of 1-11 in favor, it’s safe to say that the Broncos have come out on top in both games.
Led by second-year quarterback Bo Nix and one of the league’s toughest defenses, the Broncos have been shutting down opponents both on the ground and through the air. If the old saying “defense wins championships” holds true, Denver could be gearing up for a serious run at the division title.
Chiefs Rally to Regain Momentum After Early Setbacks
The Chiefs stand at 3-3 after battling back from a shaky 1-2 start. Managing to notch key wins over the Ravens and Lions, the team finally steadied their momentum.
Now, with All-Pro receiver Rashee Rice returning from a six-game suspension, Patrick Mahomes regains a crucial weapon in his arsenal. Mahomes has already posted 1,514 yards and 11 touchdowns through six games, and with Rice back in the mix, Kansas City’s offense has some serious potential to explode.
With Rice back in action, the Chiefs boast a stacked passing game, featuring Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown, and the ever-reliable Travis Kelce. And if history is any true indicator, picking against a team that’s owned the division for nine straight years would be considered only a fool’s move.
So, Who Takes the Divison?
Over the last 6 games, the Chargers have clearly managed to hold their ground with a flawless 3-0 record in the division. Quarterback Justin Herbert and coach Jim Harbaugh look like a powerhouse duo: one that can outplay and outsmart any opponent who crosses their path. Week after week.
And although the Broncos seem to have an awe-inspiring defense, they will have a hard time matching up with the power and skill of the wide receiver core and quarterback play from the Chargers. The Chiefs have the history, that’s certain, but, in my humble opinion, their defense has taken a step back in 2025. At the moment, their defense ranks 21st in the NFL, which could result in some serious struggles against the Chargers’ offense.
And last but not least, sorry, Raiders fans, I simply don’t see you guys surprising the league and making a run in the AFC West. The division is too good for the Raiders to make a surprise run.
