Oronde Gadsden NFL Rookie Stats & Fantasy Outlook
Los Angeles Chargers rookie tight end Oronde Gadsden has taken the NFL by storm in the last couple of weeks. Gadsden has 19 receptions in three games, 309 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. An elite stretch for a tight end that many had never heard about heading into the NFL 2025 season.
Let’s break down Gadsden’s college career, his NFL combine performance, and his future outlook in the NFL.
College Career and NFL Draft
Gadsden spent four seasons at Syracuse, where he dominated during his sophomore and senior seasons. There, he caught 61 passes for 975 yards and six receiving touchdowns in his sophomore year. We could say, a dominant year that got him on the radar of NFL scouts.
Going into his junior season, there were whispers around Syracuse that it would be his final season in orange. Unfortunately, Gadsden battled injury, playing only two games. He managed to bounce back as a senior, with 73 catches for 934 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns.
After a stellar senior season, Gadsden had a sound pro-day, where he posted a solid 4.62 40-yard dash time. Ultimately, his senior season stats and 40-yard dash time were good enough for Gadsden to earn a draft selection in April’s NFL Draft.
Furthermore, Gadsden went to the Los Angeles Chargers in the 5th round of the draft, for a team with a gaping hole at the tight end position at the time. Looking back, it couldn’t have been a better landing spot for the rookie.
A Record-Breaking Rookie?
There have only been 3 rookie tight ends in the history of the NFL to surpass 1,000 receiving yards during their rookie season. Those players are Brock Bowers (2024), Kyle Pitts (2021), and Mike Ditka (1961).
Currently, Gadsden is sitting at 385 yards, but 309 yards have come in the past three games. With nine games left in the Chargers’ season, Gadsden would need to average 68.5 receiving yards per game. That number is almost identical to 68.1 receiving yards per game in his first six NFL contests.
If Gadsden can get to 1,000 yards, he could go down as one of the best rookie tight ends in the history of the NFL.
Fantasy Football League Winner?
As a fifth-round draft pick, Gadsden wasn’t on the radar of most fantasy football players. After massive back-to-back performances, Gadsden is a must-start tight end for fantasy football.
Going forward, the only tight ends I would pick over Gadsden are: Trey McBride and Tyler Warren. Excluding them, I would have difficulty benching him for any other player. Pretty impressive for a tight end that was almost invisible going into the season.
If Gadsden is still available in your league, I highly recommend picking him up, no matter the cost. He is a clear top-five play at the tight end position for the remainder of the season.

Oronde Gadsden: FAQs
Q: What made Gadsden stand out at Syracuse?
Consistency and clutch plays. Gadsden was Syracuse’s go-to target: a mismatch nightmare who posted nearly 1,000 yards twice. Even after an injury-plagued junior season, he bounced back stronger, showing scouts his toughness and elite football IQ.
Q: Why did he fall to the 5th round?
Injuries and depth at tight end. The 2025 draft class was stacked, and Gadsden didn’t have jaw-dropping combine numbers. But the Chargers saw what others didn’t: a polished route-runner with reliable hands and sky-high potential.
Q: Can he really hit 1,000 yards as a rookie?
He’s got a shot. Only three rookie tight ends in NFL history have ever done it, and Gadsden’s current pace puts him right in the conversation. If he keeps this momentum, he could rewrite the rookie record books.
Q: Should fantasy managers jump on him?
Immediately. If Gadsden’s still on the waiver wire, grab him before someone else does. He’s become a weekly lock for fantasy lineups, a must-start tight end with league-winning upside.
