Philadelphia Eagles Struggle: Time to Panic in Philly?
The Philadelphia Eagles lost their second game in a row on Thursday night. Unfortunately, the team fell to the New York Giants 34-17 on the road. The loss stemmed from a scoreless second half from the Eagles, where they were outscored 14-0. A disappointing second-half effort is no shocking news for the Eagles, as they were outscored 18-0 in the fourth quarter the previous week against the Denver Broncos.
Philadelphia looked like a top-tier team after a 4-0 start, but after two straight losses, is it time to panic in Eagles country?
Run Game Woes Continue
The Eagles notably struggled to get the run game going in their Thursday night loss to the Giants. Saquon Barkley only managed to run the ball 12 times for 58 yards without a score. Similarly, Jalen Hurts scored on the ground, but only ran the ball for 13 yards on seven attempts.
Most of those attempts came from four straight tush pushes that ultimately led to an Eagles touchdown. The lack of attempts in the run game is concerning, to say the least. Especially for an Eagles team that was second in the NFL in rushing yards in 2024, averaging 179.3 rushing yards per game in the regular season.
The Eagles only run for an average of 95.3 yards per game, the 26th-best rate in the NFL 2025 season.
Saquon Barkley Injury Concern?
During the 2024 season, Barkley ran the ball 345 times, where he surpassed 2,000 rushing yards. That was his most rushing attempt in seven NFL seasons. It is safe to say, the Eagles’ Super Bowl run came solely on the back of Barkley. In fact, the team ran for over 200 yards per game during their 2024 championship run.
Now in his 8th year, the Eagles are seemingly worried about the toll those attempts have taken on Barkley’s body. The team’s offense is built around a strong running game, but if Barkley is battling fatigue from last season, they will have to look elsewhere for success.
Jalen Hurts Passing Game Struggles Are a Major Concern
With the run game struggling, the Eagles have begun to pass the ball throughout the last two games. Hurts has thrown over 200 yards in each contest. However, looking at the box score doesn’t do the passing struggles justice.
In addition, Hurts has continuously missed superstar wide receivers AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith streaking wide-open down the field. At best, his most reliable target has been tight end Dallas Goedert, who has scored two touchdowns and had over 125 receiving yards over the past two games. While Goedert is a great player, he is typically the check-down option in the Eagles’ pass game, lacking explosive plays.
Can the Eagles Bounce Back?
Looking at the schedule lying ahead, the Eagles take on the Minnesota Vikings on the road in Week 7 before returning home for a rematch against the Giants. The next two games will be vital for the team battling for the NFC East title.
While the games are no doubt winnable, the Eagles’ rushing attack needs to come to life for them to have a chance to win. If they can somehow manage to win both games, they will have a much-needed bye week to get healthy and prepare for the home stretch of the season.

Philadelphia Eagles: FAQs
Q: Why are the Eagles struggling?
Their offense has lost its rhythm, relying too much on short passes while the run game stalls. Without explosive plays, defenses easily contain them.
Q: Is Saquon Barkley injured?
There’s no confirmed injury, but he appears to be dealing with fatigue from last season’s heavy workload. The Eagles may be limiting his carries to keep him fresh.
Q: Can they still win the NFC East?
Yes, the division race is still open. However, the next two games will be critical for restoring confidence and playoff hopes.
Q: What’s the key to turning things around?
They need to reestablish the run game and give Jalen Hurts time to make better reads. A balanced offense will bring back the explosiveness that defined their 2024 season.
